Local Tips

🛡

Safety

Very safe for tourists. Watch for motorbike traffic, strong currents at southern beaches, and the occasional monkeys stealing things at Ubud's Monkey Forest. Beware of drink spiking at Kuta nightclubs.

🤝

Cultural Norms

Bali is Hindu in a mostly Muslim country. Temple visits require a sarong and sash (often provided). Don't step on offerings (canang sari) left on the ground. Remove shoes before entering temples and homes. Don't point with your index finger or touch people's heads.

💬

Language

Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) and Balinese. English widely spoken in tourist areas.

💰

Currency

Indonesian rupiah (IDR). Cash needed for markets, warungs, and rural areas. Cards accepted at hotels, upscale restaurants, and shops. 1 USD ≈ 15,000 IDR.

💵

Tipping

Not expected but appreciated. 10-15% at restaurants if no service charge. Round up taxi fares.

Gojek and Grab for rides (some tourist areas like Ubud restrict app-based rides — use local transport cooperatives). Hire a private driver for day trips (400,000-600,000 IDR/day).
