Safety
Very safe for tourists. Watch for motorbike traffic, strong currents at southern beaches, and the occasional monkeys stealing things at Ubud's Monkey Forest. Beware of drink spiking at Kuta nightclubs.
Cultural Norms
Bali is Hindu in a mostly Muslim country. Temple visits require a sarong and sash (often provided). Don't step on offerings (canang sari) left on the ground. Remove shoes before entering temples and homes. Don't point with your index finger or touch people's heads.
Language
Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) and Balinese. English widely spoken in tourist areas.
Currency
Indonesian rupiah (IDR). Cash needed for markets, warungs, and rural areas. Cards accepted at hotels, upscale restaurants, and shops. 1 USD ≈ 15,000 IDR.
