Local Tips

🛡

Safety

Generally safe. Exercise normal caution — avoid walking alone on unlit beaches at night and keep valuables secure. Bridgetown can be busy when cruise ships are in port.

🤝

Cultural Norms

Bajans are warm and friendly. Beachwear is for the beach only — cover up when entering shops and restaurants. Barbados has a strong British colonial heritage visible in its cricket culture, afternoon tea traditions, and driving on the left.

💬

Language

English (official). Bajan Creole is widely spoken among locals.

💰

Currency

Barbados dollar (BBD), fixed at 2 BBD = 1 USD. USD widely accepted. Cards accepted at most establishments.

💵

Tipping

10-15% at restaurants if service charge not included. Tip taxi drivers 10%.

Getting Around

Public Transit

5/10

Walkability

4/10
UberPublic minibuses (blue with yellow stripe) are cheap and cover most of the island — just flag one down. Taxis are unmetered; agree on the fare beforehand. Renting a car is convenient but drive on the left. The island is 34 km long so nowhere is more than an hour away.
