Safety
Very safe province. Watch for riptides at Pacific beaches — swim where lifeguards are present. Lock rental cars and don't leave valuables visible.
Cultural Norms
Ticos (Costa Ricans) use 'Pura Vida' as a greeting, farewell, and expression of contentment. They are environmentally conscious and proud of their biodiversity. Punctuality is relaxed (Tico time).
Language
Spanish. English is widely spoken in tourist areas and resorts. Guanacaste has a traditional cowboy (sabanero) culture.
Currency
Costa Rican Colon (CRC). USD widely accepted at hotels and tour operators. ATMs dispense both currencies.
