Local Tips

🛡

Safety

Lisbon is one of Europe's safest capitals. Normal precautions around pickpockets apply on tram 28, in Baixa, and around Belem. The steep cobblestone hills can be slippery when wet — wear proper shoes.

🤝

Cultural Norms

Portuguese people are warm and hospitable. Fado music is a UNESCO cultural treasure — show respect by staying quiet during performances. Meals are social events; don't rush lunch or dinner.

💬

Language

Portuguese is the language. Most young people and those in tourism speak good English. Portuguese appreciate any attempt at their language — 'obrigado/obrigada' goes a long way.

💰

Currency

Euro (EUR). Cards widely accepted. MB Way (local payment app) is used by locals but tourists won't need it. Some traditional tascas may prefer cash.

💵

Tipping

Service charge is not included. Tipping 5-10% at sit-down restaurants is appreciated. Rounding up for taxis and leaving small change at cafes is standard.

Getting Around

Public Transit

8/10

Walkability

7/10
BoltLisbon's Metro has 4 lines and is clean and efficient. The iconic tram 28 is a sightseeing experience but very crowded — take it early morning. Walking is the best way to explore but the hills are steep. Bolt and Uber are cheap and widely used.

Neighborhoods

Alfama

The oldest neighborhood built on the castle hill with labyrinthine alleys, fado houses, Sao Jorge Castle, and viewpoints (miradouros) offering stunning city and river views.

Best for: Nightlife, vintage shopping, and restaurants

Baixa & Chiado

The elegant downtown rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, with grand plazas, the Santa Justa Elevator, Lisbon's best bookshop (Bertrand), and classic cafes like A Brasileira.

Best for: Shopping, historic cafes, and classical architecture

Belem

The waterfront district of explorers with the Tower of Belem, Jeronimos Monastery, and the legendary Pasteis de Belem bakery — birthplace of the original pastel de nata.

Best for: Monuments, museums, and pasteis de nata

LX Factory

A converted industrial complex under the 25 de Abril bridge housing independent shops, creative studios, restaurants, and a stunning bookshop inside a warehouse.

Best for: Creative culture, brunch, and unique shopping
