Local Tips

🛡

Safety

Amsterdam is very safe. Watch out for bikes — they always have right of way and move fast. Stay off bike lanes (red asphalt). Be cautious in the Red Light District late at night.

🤝

Cultural Norms

The Dutch are direct and value punctuality. Splitting the bill is the norm (going Dutch). Coffee shops sell cannabis; cafes serve coffee — don't confuse them. Always lock your bike with two locks.

💬

Language

Dutch is official, but virtually everyone speaks excellent English. You rarely need Dutch in tourist interactions, though 'dank je wel' (thank you) is appreciated.

💰

Currency

Euro (EUR). The Netherlands is nearly cashless — cards and contactless payments accepted almost everywhere, even at market stalls.

💵

Tipping

Service charge is included. Rounding up by a euro or two is the norm. Tipping 5-10% for excellent service at restaurants is generous but not expected.

Getting Around

Public Transit

Walkability

9/10
BoltCycling is king — rent a bike from MacBike or Swapfiets and ride like a local. The GVB tram and Metro network covers the city well; get an OV-chipkaart. Walking is easy and pleasant along the canals. Bolt, Uber, and FreeNow are all available.

Neighborhoods

Jordaan

A picturesque neighborhood of narrow streets, hidden courtyards (hofjes), independent galleries, and cozy brown cafes. Once working-class, now Amsterdam's most charming area.

Best for: Canal walks, galleries, boutique shopping, and brown cafes

De Pijp

A multicultural, bohemian neighborhood centered around the Albert Cuyp market. Packed with global restaurants, craft beer bars, and a vibrant street life.

Best for: Street food, diverse dining, and market browsing

Oud-West (Old West)

A residential neighborhood with a thriving food scene around the Foodhallen (indoor food market), independent boutiques, and Vondelpark on its doorstep.

Best for: Food halls, Vondelpark, and local Amsterdam life

Centrum / Canal Ring

The UNESCO-listed canal ring is Amsterdam's iconic center — concentric waterways lined with gabled houses, houseboats, and most of the major museums.

Best for: Canal cruises, museums, and classic Amsterdam photos
