Reasonably safe for South America. Be vigilant with belongings in Ciudad Vieja and along the Rambla at night. Petty theft can occur; don't flash expensive phones or jewelry.

Uruguayans are laid-back and progressive. Mate (yerba mate tea) is a social ritual — you'll see everyone carrying a thermos and gourd. Don't refuse mate if offered. Greet with a kiss on the cheek.
