Safety
Reasonably safe for South America. Be vigilant with belongings in Ciudad Vieja and along the Rambla at night. Petty theft can occur; don't flash expensive phones or jewelry.
Cultural Norms
Uruguayans are laid-back and progressive. Mate (yerba mate tea) is a social ritual — you'll see everyone carrying a thermos and gourd. Don't refuse mate if offered. Greet with a kiss on the cheek.
Language
Spanish (Rioplatense dialect, similar to Argentine Spanish). Very limited English.
Currency
Uruguayan peso (UYU). USD accepted at many tourist establishments. Cards increasingly accepted but carry cash for markets and smaller shops.
