Local Tips

🛡

Safety

The Amalfi Coast is very safe. The main hazards are narrow winding roads with aggressive drivers and steep cliff paths. Wear sturdy shoes for the paths between towns. Swim only at marked beaches — currents can be strong.

🤝

Cultural Norms

This is southern Italy — meals are long and leisurely. Don't rush. Cover shoulders and knees for churches. Many shops and restaurants close for riposo (afternoon rest) from 1-4pm.

💬

Language

Italian with a Neapolitan/Southern dialect. English is spoken at hotels and tourist restaurants. Basic Italian is helpful at smaller family-run spots and lemon groves.

💰

Currency

Euro (EUR). Smaller towns may be more cash-reliant than large cities. Beach clubs, ferry tickets, and small trattorias may prefer cash.

💵

Tipping

A coperto is added to bills. Additional tipping is not expected. Leaving a few euros for excellent service at trattorias is generous.

Getting Around

Public Transit

4/10

Walkability

6/10
FreeNowSITA buses run along the coast road but are crowded and winding. Ferries between Amalfi, Positano, and Salerno are the most scenic and comfortable option. Renting a car is not recommended — the roads are terrifying and parking nearly impossible. Water taxis are expensive but worth it. FreeNow works in some areas.

Neighborhoods

Positano

The most photogenic town on the coast, with pastel-colored buildings cascading down to a pebble beach. Boutique shopping, seaside restaurants, and an impossibly romantic atmosphere.

Best for: Romance, beach clubs, luxury shopping, and photography

Amalfi Town

The historic heart of the coast with a stunning Arab-Norman cathedral, paper-making tradition, and a bustling piazza. The main ferry hub connecting coastal towns.

Best for: Cathedral, limoncello tasting, and ferry connections

Ravello

A hilltop town perched high above the coast famous for its breathtaking gardens (Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone) and the annual music festival in clifftop venues.

Best for: Gardens, classical music, and panoramic views

Praiano

A quieter, less touristy alternative between Positano and Amalfi with a local feel, excellent hiking trails, and dramatic sunset views over the sea.

Best for: Peace and quiet, hiking, and authentic coastal life
