Local Tips

🛡

Safety

Iceland is one of the safest countries in the world. The real dangers are natural: sudden weather changes, powerful winds, rogue waves on black beaches, and scalding geothermal water. Always check road and weather conditions at vedur.is and safetravel.is.

🤝

Cultural Norms

Icelanders are friendly but reserved initially. Shower thoroughly without a swimsuit before entering geothermal pools — this is non-negotiable. Respect nature and stay on marked trails to protect fragile moss and vegetation.

💬

Language

Icelandic is the official language, but virtually all Icelanders speak fluent English. You'll have no language barrier.

💰

Currency

Icelandic Krona (ISK). Iceland is nearly cashless — cards are accepted everywhere, even at remote hot dog stands. Contactless payment is universal.

💵

Tipping

Tipping is not part of Icelandic culture. Service charge is included in all prices. You do not need to tip at restaurants, taxis, or for tours.

Getting Around

Public Transit

4/10

Walkability

8/10
HreyfillDowntown Reykjavik is compact and very walkable. Straeto city buses cover the greater Reykjavik area. For day trips, a rental car is essential — there's no rail system in Iceland. Route 1 (Ring Road) circles the country. Hreyfill is the main taxi service; Uber does not operate in Iceland.

Neighborhoods
