Local Tips
Safety
Very safe city. Standard big-city awareness applies — watch for pickpockets on the Tube and at major tourist sites. Be alert crossing streets — traffic drives on the left.
Cultural Norms
The British value queuing — never cut in line. 'Please', 'thank you', and 'sorry' are used constantly. Pubs close earlier than bars (11pm on weekdays). Stand on the right side of escalators and walk on the left.
Language
English. London is one of the most multilingual cities in the world with 300+ languages spoken.
Currency
British pound sterling (GBP). Cards and contactless payment accepted almost everywhere. Many places no longer accept cash.
Tipping
10-12.5% at restaurants (often added as a service charge — check the bill). No need to tip at pubs or for counter service. Round up taxi fares.
