Local Tips
Safety
Santa Fe is very safe. The altitude (7,199 ft) can cause headaches and shortness of breath — drink lots of water and take it easy your first day. Intense sun at altitude means strong sunscreen is essential.
Cultural Norms
Santa Fe has deep Native American and Hispanic roots. Respect Indigenous art and culture — buy directly from Native artists at the Palace of the Governors portal. Don't photograph people without permission.
Language
English and Spanish widely spoken. Many place names and cultural terms are in Spanish or Tewa (the local Pueblo language).
Currency
USD. Cards accepted almost everywhere. Cash is helpful at market stalls and for tipping art vendors.
Tipping
Standard US tipping: 18-20% at restaurants, 15-20% for tour guides.
