Local Tips

🛡

Safety

Kyoto is extremely safe. The main concern is accidentally disrespecting temple etiquette or the geisha/maiko culture. Never chase or grab geisha for photos in Gion — they are working artists.

🤝

Cultural Norms

Kyoto is Japan's most traditional city. Be especially mindful at temples and shrines — bow at torii gates, cleanse hands at water basins, and dress modestly. Many traditional ryokans have specific bathing and dining protocols.

💬

Language

Japanese with Kyoto dialect (Kyo-kotoba). English is less common than Tokyo outside major tourist sites. Translation apps are very helpful. Signs at major temples have English descriptions.

💰

Currency

Japanese Yen (JPY). Kyoto is more cash-dependent than Tokyo, especially at temples (admission fees), traditional restaurants, and small shops. Bring enough yen for the day.

💵

Tipping

Never tip in Japan. At ryokans, exceptional service may be acknowledged with a small gift rather than cash.

Getting Around

Public Transit

7/10

Walkability

7/10
GOCity buses are the primary transit — get a one-day bus pass. The Karasuma and Tozai subway lines serve the center. Renting a bicycle is the best way to explore the flat city. Taxis are metered and reliable. The GO app works in Kyoto. JR trains connect to Osaka, Nara, and the Shinkansen.

Neighborhoods

Gion

Kyoto's legendary geisha district with traditional wooden machiya houses, teahouses, and the chance to spot maiko (apprentice geisha) hurrying to evening engagements along Hanamikoji Street.

Best for: Geisha culture, traditional architecture, and evening atmosphere

Higashiyama

The eastern hills district is a preserved historic streetscape with Kiyomizu-dera temple, ceramic shops on Ninenzaka lane, and atmospheric paths connecting major temples.

Best for: Temple-hopping, traditional shops, and scenic walks

Arashiyama

The western bamboo grove district with the iconic pathway through towering bamboo, the Togetsukyo bridge, and monkey park overlooking the city.

Best for: Bamboo grove, nature walks, and riverside scenery

Downtown (Kawaramachi / Nishiki)

Kyoto's commercial heart centered on the Nishiki Market ('Kyoto's Kitchen'), Teramachi shopping arcade, and the Kawaramachi nightlife strip along the Kamo River.

Best for: Street food, shopping, and nightlife along the river
