Best Budget Surf Destinations in 2026: Ranked by Cost Per Wave

Most "best surf destination" lists rank places by wave quality alone. That's useful if money is no object, but most of us are working with a real budget. So we took a different approach: we ranked destinations by how much surfing you get per dollar spent.

We scored 65 destinations on surf quality (1–10), then factored in daily costs and average flight prices from major US airports. The result is a list that balances great waves with real-world affordability.

The Rankings

DestinationSurf ScoreBudget/DayFlights from USBest Months
Bali, Indonesia9/10$35$700–900Apr–Oct
Costa Rica9/10$60$350–500Dec–Apr
San Juan, Puerto Rico8/10$80$150–300Nov–Mar
Barbados8/10$90$350–500Nov–May
San Diego, USA9/10$90$100–300Sep–Nov
Maui, Hawaii9/10$150$280–620Apr–May, Sep–Oct

The Budget Pick: Bali

At $35/day on a budget, Bali is hard to beat. A surf score of 9/10, consistent breaks year-round (best April through October), and daily costs that include accommodation, food, and board rental. The catch is flights — $700+ from the US means you need a longer stay (10+ nights) to make the per-day economics work. If you're coming from Europe or Australia, this math changes dramatically.

Key breaks: Uluwatu, Canggu (Echo Beach, Batu Bolong), Padang Padang.

The Value Pick: Costa Rica

Costa Rica scores the same 9/10 for surf quality but sits much closer to the US — flights from Miami run $350–400. At $60/day for budget travel, a 7-night trip from the East Coast comes in around $800 total. Pacific coast (Tamarindo, Santa Teresa, Nosara) for consistent beach breaks, Caribbean side (Puerto Viejo) for reef breaks.

Both coasts work, but they peak at different times: Pacific is best December through April (dry season), Caribbean from January through March.

The No-Passport Pick: San Juan & Puerto Rico

No passport required for US citizens. Flights from NYC or Miami can be under $200. The surf is in Rincón on the west coast — winter swells from the North Atlantic produce the best waves in the Caribbean. San Juan itself is more about culture and nightlife (nightlife score: 8/10), making this a great combo destination.

How We Calculated This

Every destination in our database has activity scores from 1–10, daily budget estimates at three tiers (budget, moderate, luxury), and average flight prices from five major US hubs. We weighted surf score at 50%, inverse daily cost at 30%, and inverse flight cost at 20% to produce the rankings above.
