Best Time to Visit Southeast Asia: Month-by-Month Weather Guide
The most common mistake with Southeast Asia planning: assuming the whole region has the same weather. It doesn't. Thailand's dry season is Vietnam's rainy season. Bali's best months overlap with monsoon in other Indonesian islands.
Here's the actual breakdown from our destination data.
Southeast Asia by Season
| Destination | Best Months | Worst Months | Budget/Day | Top Activities |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bangkok, Thailand | Nov–Feb | Apr–May (extreme heat) | $40 | Food 10, Culture 8, Nightlife 8 |
| Bali, Indonesia | Apr–Oct | Dec–Mar (wet) | $35 | Surf 9, Wellness 9, Food 9 |
| Vietnam | Dec–Feb (south), Sep–Nov (north) | Jul–Aug (monsoon) | $25 | Food 10, Adventure 8, Culture 8 |
November to February: Thailand and Southern Vietnam
This is peak season for Thailand — dry, warm (not scorching), and the best weather for beaches, temples, and street food. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and the southern islands (Phuket, Koh Samui, Krabi) are all at their best.
Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc, Mekong Delta) is also dry and pleasant. You can combine Thailand and southern Vietnam in a single trip — flights between Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City are $50–100.
Budget for 2 weeks: $700–1,000 (not including international flights). At $40/day in Thailand and $25/day in Vietnam, Southeast Asia in winter is one of the world's best travel deals.
April to October: Bali
While Thailand is in its hot/wet season (April through October), Bali is in its dry season. This is the ideal time for surf, beach, and outdoor activities. The trade wind season means consistent waves and clear skies.
Bali at $35/day is remarkable value: a villa with a pool for $25/night, a warung meal for $2, a surf lesson for $15, a day pass at a beach club for $10.
The Shoulder Month: September
September is the one month that works almost everywhere in Southeast Asia: - Thailand: transitioning out of wet season, prices are low, crowds are thin - Bali: tail end of dry season, still great weather, less crowded than July/August - Vietnam: good for the north (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa) before it gets cold
If you can only pick one month, September gives you the most flexibility.
Months to Avoid
- April–May in Bangkok: temperatures hit 95–100°F with extreme humidity. The city is genuinely unpleasant
- December–February in Bali: rainy season means daily downpours. You can still go, but beach days are unreliable
- July–August everywhere: monsoon season across much of the region, plus peak tourist pricing where it is dry
