Local Tips
Safety
Very safe. The main risks are sunburn, heat exhaustion in summer, and the steep, often slippery steps in Fira and Oia. Wear sturdy footwear, not flip-flops, for walking the caldera paths.
Cultural Norms
Greeks are warm and hospitable. A nod upward means 'no', a nod downward means 'yes'. Cover shoulders and knees when entering churches. Lunch is the main meal (2-3pm); dinner is late (9pm+).
Language
Greek. English very widely spoken in tourist areas.
Currency
Euro (EUR). Cards accepted at most restaurants and hotels. Carry cash for small tavernas, bus fare, and village shops.
Tipping
Not obligatory but appreciated. Round up or leave 5-10% at restaurants. Leave small change for cafe service.

Neighborhoods
Oia
The iconic village at the northern tip with blue-domed churches, whitewashed houses, luxury boutique hotels, and the world's most famous sunset.
Best for: Sunset viewing, photography, luxury hotels, and upscale shopping
Fira
The island's capital perched on the caldera rim with shops, restaurants, nightlife, and the cable car down to the old port.
Best for: Nightlife, shopping, the Archaeological Museum, and caldera views with more energy than Oia
Imerovigli
The 'Balcony to the Aegean' — the highest point on the caldera with dramatic views and a quieter, more exclusive atmosphere.
Best for: Luxury retreats, Skaros Rock hike, and the best unobstructed caldera views
Kamari / Perissa
Beach villages on the east coast with dark volcanic sand beaches, beach bars, tavernas, and a more relaxed, affordable atmosphere.
Best for: Beach days, budget accommodation, water sports, and casual taverna dining
Pyrgos
A hilltop village in the island's interior with a medieval castle, narrow alleys, and panoramic views without the caldera crowds.
Best for: Authentic village life, fewer tourists, wine tastings, and the best 360-degree views
