Local Tips

🛡

Safety

Rome is safe for tourists but pickpocketing is common on buses (especially line 64), the Metro, and near the Colosseum. Keep bags zipped and in front of you. Beware of street scams near major monuments.

🤝

Cultural Norms

Dress modestly when visiting churches — shoulders and knees must be covered. Italians eat late: lunch at 1pm, dinner at 8:30pm. Standing at a bar for espresso is cheaper than sitting at a table.

💬

Language

Italian is the primary language. English is spoken in tourist areas and hotels. Learning basic Italian phrases like 'per favore' and 'grazie' goes a long way.

💰

Currency

Euro (EUR). Credit cards accepted at most restaurants and shops. Some smaller trattorias, gelaterias, and street vendors may prefer cash.

💵

Tipping

A coperto (cover charge) of 1-3 euros per person is added to restaurant bills. Additional tipping is not expected but rounding up is appreciated for great service.

Getting Around

Public Transit

Walkability

9/10
FreeNowRome has two Metro lines (A and B) plus buses and trams. Most of the historic center is walkable — in fact, walking is the best way to discover Rome. Official white taxis start at the taxi ranks. FreeNow and Uber are available but surge pricing is common.
