Local Tips

🛡

Safety

Very safe. Standard city awareness applies. Watch for cyclists — dedicated bike lanes are everywhere and riders go fast. Some neighborhoods (Neukölln, Kreuzberg) feel gritty but are generally safe.

🤝

Cultural Norms

Berliners are direct and value personal space. Quietness on Sundays is taken seriously (Sonntagsruhe). Cash is king — many restaurants, bars, and even clubs don't accept cards. Club culture is sacred — don't take photos on the dance floor.

💬

Language

German. English widely spoken, especially by younger people and in tourist areas.

💰

Currency

Euro (EUR). Many places are cash-only (restaurants, clubs, smaller shops). Always have cash on hand. ATMs (Geldautomat) are widespread.

💵

Tipping

5-10% at restaurants is standard. Round up to the nearest euro at bars and cafes. Tell the server the total you'd like to pay when paying.

Getting Around

Public Transit

9/10

Walkability

8/10
BoltExcellent U-Bahn (subway), S-Bahn (overground rail), tram, and bus network. Buy a Tageskarte (day ticket) for unlimited travel. The city is very bikeable and flat — rent from Nextbike or Tier. Berlin is spread out so the transit system is essential for covering distances.

Neighborhoods

Mitte

The historic center with Museum Island (UNESCO), Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie, and major monuments.

Best for: History, museums (Pergamon, Neues Museum), iconic landmarks, and upscale dining

Kreuzberg

A diverse, multicultural neighborhood with Turkish markets, street art, canal-side bars, and a legendary nightlife scene.

Best for: Street food (Turkish market on Maybachufer), nightlife, street art, and counter-culture

Friedrichshain

The alternative neighborhood with the East Side Gallery (Berlin Wall remnants), RAW Gelände creative complex, and the famous Berghain club.

Best for: East Side Gallery, clubs, live music, and a young, alternative crowd

Prenzlauer Berg

A gentrified former East Berlin neighborhood with beautiful pre-war buildings, brunch cafes, the Mauerpark flea market, and a family-friendly atmosphere.

Best for: Brunch culture, Mauerpark Sunday flea market and karaoke, boutique shopping

Neukölln

Berlin's most diverse and rapidly evolving neighborhood with a strong Middle Eastern community, trendy bars, and emerging art spaces.

Best for: Authentic street food, dive bars, emerging galleries, and a local non-touristy feel
