Local Tips
Safety
Very safe. Standard city awareness applies. Watch for cyclists — dedicated bike lanes are everywhere and riders go fast. Some neighborhoods (Neukölln, Kreuzberg) feel gritty but are generally safe.
Cultural Norms
Berliners are direct and value personal space. Quietness on Sundays is taken seriously (Sonntagsruhe). Cash is king — many restaurants, bars, and even clubs don't accept cards. Club culture is sacred — don't take photos on the dance floor.
Language
German. English widely spoken, especially by younger people and in tourist areas.
Currency
Euro (EUR). Many places are cash-only (restaurants, clubs, smaller shops). Always have cash on hand. ATMs (Geldautomat) are widespread.
Tipping
5-10% at restaurants is standard. Round up to the nearest euro at bars and cafes. Tell the server the total you'd like to pay when paying.
